BOAT CONDITION

EXCELLENT

Your boat's gel-coat is in prestine condition with no discoloration or oxidation on the surface.  Your normally wax your boat a number of times over the season, and usually attend to any discolorations on the gelcoat when you see them.  Any aluminum or chrome has no signs of oxidation or water marks.

GOOD

Your boat's gel-coat shows some signs of the enviroment beating on it, but nothing too extreme.  Maybe some light oxidation from sunlight or salt water, which normally can be easily removed with an average strength rubbing compound.  Your boat is kept clean or out of the water when not in use, and any exposed aluminum or chrome shows minimal signs of oxidation or watermarks.

NEEDS TLC

You have oxidation on your gelcoat that cannot be removed with an average strength rubbing compound, and would consider wet sanding the gel coat to remove it.  Major discoloration on the gelcoat at the water line that is difficult to remove. Heavy oxidation on exposed aluminum or chrome.

AMOUNT OF WORK

This is the amount of time you have to devote to your project, including the equipment that you have available (orbital buffer, high speed buffer, or the old fashion way, by hand).  In every combination you can apply by hand or machine EXCEPT with Presta Super Cut Compound (on the TLC levels) where a high speed buffer is required.

THE MINIMUM

You only have a limited amount of time to prep your boat and want to get the best results in the least amount of time.  All of the choices can be applied by hand or machine.

I'VE GOT SOME TIME

You want the best finish possible and are willing to work moderatley to get it, these combinations offer the highest level of results but require more work. With Collinite products, the more work you put into your gel-coat, the longer the finish will last.

WHATEVER IT TAKES

You are a fanatic about keeping your prestine gelcoat looking like new through the season, and for more oxidized gelcoats, you want to completely remove the oxidation before applying wax.

PRODUCT LISTED IN DETAIL

COMPOUNDS

The stronger the compound the deeper the cut to the gelcoat to remove the oxidation.  Think of oxidation much like tooth decay, where the top layer has begun to degrade and micro-crevices form on the surface.  Compounds are used to remove that damaged layer on the surface of the gelcoat so that the wax will protect the refurbished surface.  The stronger the compound, the more care must be taken in preventing 'burn' on the gelcoat when using a high speed buffer.  Do not lean in hard on corners when using heavier cutting compounds.  Listed from lightest cutting to heaviest.

COLLINITE 920 FIBERGLASS BOAT CLEANER

Collinite 920 is the best, all around choice for most gel coats.  It preps the surface perfectly for the wax application, and will remove most topical discolorations and light to moderate oxidation.  This product can be applied by hand, oribital buffer or machine.  Use a small amount on your pad and rub into the gelcoat completely. Buff off any residue before waxing.Available in pint bottles and half gallons.  A pint is enough for the hull of a 20-23 foot boat in above average shape.

PRESTA ULTRA CUTTING CREME  (stronger)

Ultra Cutting Creme is an optimal choice for gelcoats with moderate oxidation from sunlight or water, as well as removing stains along the water line.  Ultra Cut is best suited with a high speed buffer and wool compound pad. Also a better choice for darker colored gelcoats that show any light oxidation. On some oxidation, a few passes with Ultra Cut is required to remove the oxidation. Only use a small amount on the pad and work completely into the finish until it 'flashes off' where there's no compound left on the finish. It's best to let the finish sit for an hour after working with this compound to see if any minor amounts of oxidation are still showing before applying wax.  Available in 8 ounce and 32 ounce bottles, and 6 pound tubs. 32 ounces is rougly enough for the hull of a 30 foot boat with minor oxidation.

PRESTA SUPER CUT COMPOUND (strongest)

Super Cut is a 600 grit compound and is the strongest compound we've found for gelcoats.  This is the only choice for heavily oxidized gelcoats where wet sanding is a consideration.  This product suited for use with a high speed buffer and wool compound pad.  In most cases there is no swirls left after using this product, but on some darker colored gelcoats, you may have to follow up with Ultra Cutting Creme to remove some swirls. Only use a small amount of this product at a time.  Apply 3 dime sized drips of the compound on your pad and completely work into the gelcoat. This stuff is the real deal so take great care not to burn any corners and do not work over lettering or any painted lines. 32 ounces is enough for the hull of a 30 foot boat.

COLLINITE WAXES

COLLINITE 870 FLEETWAX LIQUID

This is Collinite's only 'cleaner-wax' product.  It contains both a compound and wax.  It's good for gelcoats in good condition with some minor oxidation, as an easy one-step process.  It's applied like a compound, by rubbing into the finish, then let sit like a wax, and buff off.  Can be applied by hand, but is best applied with an orbital buffer. Available in pint bottles or half gallon containers. Pint bottles cover the hull of a 20 foot boat.

COLLINITE 925 FIBERGLASS BOAT WAX

Collinite 925 is the most popular choice for gelcoats.  It's relatively easy to work with and provides a long lasting protective finish.  It's particularly effective after the finish is compounded, as the wax sits on the gelcoat more evenly and buffs off easier.  The rule of thumb will all Collinite Waxes: do not apply onto your entire finish at once and let the wax completely dry on the surface, as it will be difficult to remove.  Apply to a 4' x 4' section and let almost dry, then buff off.  The longer you let the wax sit, the better the durability BUT the harder it is to remove.  Can be applied and removed by hand or buffer. Available in pint bottles.  1 pint covers the hull of a 20 foot boat

COLLINITE 885 FLEETWAX PASTE

This is Collinite's award winning wax for durability.  Just about every field test conducted by boating magazines over the years have 885 as the clear winner.  Collinite uses the highest quality caranauba for a finish that will last all season long.  The Collinite rule of thumb applies in spades here: do not apply to the entire finish at once!  You'll need a chisel to remove the wax.  Apply to a 3' x 3'  section and let almost dry, then buff.  Only work in small sections at one time.  Your gauranteed a protective finish all season long, you'll see the water bead late into the season, and you'll know you're still covered by FleetWax 885. 16oz can is suitable for most boats to about 35 feet.  (Note: FleetWax 885 and 870 FleetWax Liquid are two completely different products).

COMBO PAKS

Most products listed above are sold in 'combo paks' on our website, where we price the product combination attractively.  So a Collinite 920-925 'combo pak' is a pint bottle of 920 and 925 packaged together at a discount over ordering the two products individually.

What about Insulator Wax 845?  Yes, it's the most well known; Collinite 845 is the same product as Collinite 925.  Insulator wax is the original product used on electric insulators over 65 years ago, once Collinite became a major player in the marine market they labeled a bottle specifically for the boating industry, and 925 Fiberglass Boat Wax was created.  On our site, we've created combo paks for boaters using Collinite 925, to keep it simple.
